If you are a Professional Engineer whose practice includes the design of engineering works or systems in connection with buildings, structures, or facilities and systems covered by the Florida Building Code, you must complete an Advanced Building Code course for the current edition prior to participating in the design of engineering projects covered by the code. The course is required to retain the “Special Qualifications” designation on your licensure record, pursuant to Section 471.0195, Florida Statutes.
You must take an Advanced Building Code course on the eighth edition of the Florida Building Code, which goes into effect Dec. 31, 2023. Courses on the seventh edition or earlier are no longer valid. The Florida Building Code is typically revised every three years, so PEs will need to take a new ABC course at that time.
Use the Florida Building Code Online portal at the Department of Business and Professional Regulation to search for a provider of the Advanced Building Code course.
Search for an ABC provider at floridabuilding.org
If you have difficulties using the provider search portal, please contact the Florida Building Commission.
After completing the course, you must provide the Board with a copy of the completion certificate that shows the course number, course hours, Code edition year, and Code or course focus so that your record can be updated. Certificates should be emailed to Wendy Anderson at wanderson@fbpe.org. When submitting your certificate to the Board, you must include your full name and PE license number in the email.
