If all continues as planned, pencil-and-paper PE exams will be ushered out with the fall 2023 administration of the PE Structural exam. In addition, several CBT exams will be moving from the fall to the spring in 2024.
But before those changes take place, the next PE Structural exam will be administered in April.
Spring 2023 Exam Details
The April 2023 PE Structural exam will be administered via pencil-and-paper on Thursday and Friday, April 13 and 14, 2023. Florida’s administration site will be in Orlando.
The Vertical Forces component of the PE Structural exam will be administered only on Thursday. The Lateral Forces component of the PE Structural exam will be administered only on Friday.

Spring 2023 Registration —Registration for the spring PE Structural exams closes for examinees at 3 p.m. (Eastern Time) Thursday, Feb. 16, 2023.
Exam Accommodations — Requests for testing accommodations must be submitted through the E3 system by the registration deadline of Feb. 16. These include accommodations for ADA and religious reasons and for active military service. More information about accommodations is posted on the NCEES website. Any other requests for deviations from the schedule must be submitted to Bob Whorton, PE, Manager of Compliance and Security, at bwhorton@ncees.org.
PE Exam Changes
The PE Structural exam will be offered for the last time in pencil-and-paper format in fall 2023. Additional information can be found on the NCEES website.
Beginning in 2024, a number of PE exams currently being administered in the fall will shift to the spring:
- PE Structural – The PE Structural exam will be offered for the last time in pencil-and-paper format. Additional information can be found on the NCEES website.
- PE Control Systems – The final October administration of the PE Control Systems exam will be in October 2023. The exam will then shift to administration each April beginning in 2024.
- PE Electrical and Computer: Electronics, Controls, and Communications – The final October administration of the PE Electrical and Computer: Electronics, Controls, and Communications exam will be in October 2023. The exam will then shift to administration each April beginning in 2024.
- PE Fire Protection – The final October administration of the PE Fire Protection exam will be in October 2023. The exam will then shift to administration each April beginning in 2024.
- PE Agricultural and Biological – The PE Agricultural and Biological exam will have new specifications and design standards starting in October 2023. The specifications will be posted in April 2023 on the NCEES website.
- PE Petroleum – The PE Petroleum exam will have new specifications and design standards starting in October 2023. The specifications will be posted in April 2023 on the NCEES website.
In addition, fees for PE exams are scheduled to increase in 2024.
