FBPE investigators conducted an educational site visit to a civil engineering project in Bristol, Fla., on Friday, Dec. 7, 2018.
A segment of the city’s stormwater drainage system had begun to deteriorate prior to Hurricane Michael, but heavy rains from the October storm washed out a large portion of the system and part of a street. Residents were evacuated from a house less than a dozen feet from the washout.
Justin Ford, PE, from Dewberry Engineers Inc., led a tour of the site for investigators Wendy Anderson and Trebor Raybon. Dewberry is conducting the engineering work for the City of Bristol.
The project calls for restoring the washed out soil, installing and connecting a precast junction box and concrete pipes, rebuilding the outlet using corrugated plastic pipe, and adding riprap at the outflow to reduce erosion.
